At the official inauguration reception, we unveiled the nameplate of “Qian Xiuling Hall”, the biggest room in the new Belgian embassy building. Who is Mrs. Qian, and why do we commemorate her by naming our multifunctional room after her?

Qian Xiuling was born into a prominent family in Yixing City, Jiangsu Province, in 1912. In her quest for academic excellence, Qian Xiuling ventured to Belgium alongside her brother to pursue her studies in chemistry at the University of Leuven in 1929. She was an exceptionally dedicated and brilliant student. She earned a Doctorate in Chemistry. Inspired by the remarkable achievements of Marie Curie, Qian Xiuling aspired to follow in her footsteps and make significant contributions to the scientific community.

In 1933, Qian Xiuling married Doctor Grégoire de Pérlinghi and settled in the southern region of Belgium. However, her life took an unexpected turn during the tumultuous years of the Second World War. She learned that 97 Belgians from the Resistance Movement had been captured by the Nazi Forces and were facing the threat of capital punishment.

Despite being pregnant at the time, Qian Xiuling embarked on a courageous mission. Utilizing her connections, she personally sought an audience with General Alexander von Falkenhausen, the German Military Governor, who happened to be a friend of her elder cousin Qian Zhuolun. This was not the first time she had approached him, as she had previously successfully pleaded for the life of another Belgian facing execution. Her intervention proved instrumental once again, as she managed to save the lives of all 97 Belgians.

In recognition of her heroic act, the Belgian government awarded Qian Xiuling the prestigious Medal of Gratitude, a testament to her selflessness and bravery. To honor her memory and commemorate her extraordinary achievements, a street in the city of Ecaussinnes (south of Brussels) was named after Qian Xiuling.

Qian Xiuling died at the age of 96 in 2008. She embarked on an extraordinary path that led her from China to Belgium, leaving an indelible mark on both countries. Her legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding us of the power of compassion and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many.

Now, the embassy has a hall that bears her name. Mrs. Charline Tongxin Qian, grand-niece of Qian Xiuling, was present at the inauguration that day and unveiled the nameplate. The room serves as a reminder of the importance of courage, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge in shaping a better future for all.
